Unfortunately for the thrifty mom in me, it's not Lawry's that's in the big bulk seasoning containers that you can get at Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's.
Don't get me wrong. The brand they carry is... just fine. When I use it, it makes my ground beef taste like taco meat, so I really don't even have anything to complain about. But it's just not my beloved Lawry's, which I can only find in grocery stores in the tiny little envelopes for at least 50 cents each - which is kind of a lot, especially when you consider that I'm going to be using at least two or maybe three envelopes worth each night. Who wants to spend a dollar or more just seasoning their meat? Not me.
Then one day last week, I ran out. And this time I didn't have more in my food storage. And I was right in the middle of making taco soup, which really needs taco seasoning, or it's just really boring. At least, I'm sure it would be. I didn't have to try it, because when I realized that I was looking at some pretty plain soup, it occurred to me that probably someone else had already figured out how to fake it, and had probably even put their recipe online for me to use.
See my circa 1995 paprika down there? I got it from my Grandma. :) |
Yep! Lots of people, in fact. I guess I'm not alone in my preference for Lawry's.
I found this particular recipe here, but I didn't have all the ingredients they listed, so I skipped them, and it still tasted right! Lucky me! Now I get that perfect taco taste, and it's even cheaper than buying taco seasoning in bulk!
My Version of Lawry's Taco Seasoning
*this is for one pound of meat*
1 t chili powder
1 t paprika
3/4 t salt
3/4 t minced onion
1/2 t cumin
1/4 t garlic powder
1/8 t oregano
Go make yourself some Lawry's tacos! Or taco soup... or seven-layer dip... that's what we're having for dinner tonight!
