Tip of the Day: Change Out Your Shower Head

If you have a crummy shower head, this post is for you.

My old, basic shower head.  $2

A water-saving shower head can cost as little as $10, and here are four reasons why you should get one now:

1. Save money.  Heating your water costs money, and the more you use, the more you spend.  Getting a more efficient shower head can save you real money (dollars, not pennies!) on your utilities.

2. More people can get a HOT shower in one morning.  It happens every Sunday morning.  Everyone decides they need a shower, but by the time the third person gets in, there is no hot water left!  Big Families need big water!  So unless you want to spend the money for a second hot water tank, you should try cutting back on the water you use.  A more efficient shower head will help your hot water last longer so more people can enjoy it.

3. Enjoy every shower more.  Efficient shower heads feel better.  It seems strange, but even though they spray out less water, it feels like more!  Instead of lots of water slowly dripping on your head, you get less water sprayed at high pressure.  And it feels awesome!

4. It's easy!  If you go to Lowe's and buy a shower head in a box, chances are it will include almost everything you need to install it.  You'll probably just need a wrench (or a pair of pliers or super strong man hands).  You don't have to turn off your main water.  You just unscrew your old shower head.  Wrap the plumbing tape (included in your shower head kit) around the old pipe.  Screw on the new shower head.  That's it.  It's like changing a light bulb!  You can do it!

My new, awesome, handheld, 5 settings, energy efficient shower head.  $25

Update: We usually only get 2 (maybe 3) showers in a morning before we run out of hot water. Today I was number 4 in the shower line (and my daughter decided to run a load of laundry using hot water at the same time!) and I still had hot water! Hooray for hot showers!!!

  3. There is a general misconception that all shower heads are the same. This is erroneous. Shower heads have developed into many different types. Technology has also impacted the way they operate and what many people do not realize is that the wrong head can cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in energy and water costs. Many shower heads that we use now are very wasteful when it comes to water and energy. best handheld shower head
